Building a Gazebo

Written by Rob Stone

So what exactly is a gazebo? It is a free standing pavilion type structure and is usually of an octagonal shape. In most cases it has a roof but is open on all sides. This enables the creation of shade in the sunshine but maintains an open air breeze. Gazebos will be spotted mainly in a park or a spacious field but what about building one of your own in your very own backyard or preferably on the lawn itself.

A lovely lawn with a gazebo sitting on it is the essence of beauty. It is hardly surprising that many people are choosing to build one of their own for outdoor rest and relaxation. Before you decide on what shape, size and style you need ensure you take ample time out to consider where it is going to stand and the reason you are building it. In other words will it be utilised simply for sitting in or do you have other ideas for its use. Next, is the building of a gazebo within your DIY capabilities or will you need to call in the professionals? You think you can do it? Let’s go then.

On of the most difficult problems will be the choice of roof. The roof is not there for aesthetics, it is to protect the gazebo from all the elements our unpredictable weather can throw at it. The most common roofing materials are wood, metal or an acrylic material. The latter are usually made from a glassy type thermoplastic material. This is an extremely durable versatile type of roof. A downside with a metal roof is the horrendous noise when it rains very hard on it. Wooden roofs do act as sound barriers and can block out any noise. However, whichever material you opt for, ensure you get the right degree of slope on the roof so that rain, snow and any debris like leaves can fall straight off and not accumulate.

Although you are building this yourself it is useful to know that you can purchase a gazebo kit which will save you the problem of choosing the lumber and cutting and measuring it. All those complex angles will be made much easier to overcome. The pieces are all pre-cut and ready for immediate assembly. Anyone with limited diy experience will be able to cope with these kits.

Gazebo kits can be purchased in many shapes and sizes including square, rectangular and as we mentioned above, octagonal. Make sure before you order that you know exactly what you want, the size of the area you want it to take up, and any local building requirements you may need to overcome although it is doubtful there will be any restrictions for a standard size gazebo.
